Twinkle Khanna Inspires Next-Gen Designers at NIF Global Mumbai with Candid Insights on Creativity, Authenticity, and Real-World Design
"Machines don’t have a soul - design must come from authenticity, not algorithms," says Twinkle Khanna
In a thoughtfully curated engagement that blended inspiration with practical insight, renowned author, entrepreneur, columnist, and interior design enthusiast Twinkle Khanna engaged with aspiring designers in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating session at NIF Global Mumbai – Andheri Platinum Centre.
The experience was further enriched by an immersive campus walkthrough, where Twinkle Khanna explored curated student design installations across fashion, interiors, and spatial storytelling. A key highlight was “The Design Banter Show,” an interactive student-led segment that sparked candid conversations on design, trends, and personal expression.
As a mentor at NIF Global, Twinkle Khanna shared thought-provoking perspectives drawn from her multidisciplinary journey. Addressing aspiring designers, she emphasized the importance of balancing creativity with functionality, particularly in interior design. “Breaking rules may work in art; Picasso did that brilliantly - but design, especially interiors, must remain functional. It’s not just expression; it’s about how people live,” she remarked.
During an engaging session, she candidly responded to student questions, offering sharp and practical insights. Speaking on home design essentials, she highlighted the need for space and adaptability, adding humorously, “You need space, especially when you have many personalities within yourself.”
She also addressed modern design challenges, cautioning against superficial trends. “Designing for Instagram first is a red flag. Luxury without comfort is another. True design must serve the user, not just the lens,” she noted.
On professional integrity, Khanna encouraged students to make mindful decisions, even in personal situations. “If a friend isn’t qualified, you don’t hire them. Clarity and honesty matter in this profession,” she said, reinforcing the importance of merit-driven choices.
Highlighting the evolving creative landscape, she spoke about the growing influence of AI. “We are living in a time where AI is everywhere, but it’s only a tool. Creativity must remain human. Machines don’t have a soul; your authenticity is your greatest strength,” she advised.
Vivek Gautam, Director, NIF Global Andheri, shared, “It was an honour to host Twinkle Khanna at our campus. Her ability to blend creativity with clarity gave our students invaluable real-world perspectives. At NIF Global, we remain committed to creating such meaningful engagements that prepare our students to become thoughtful and future-ready designers.”
The visit reinforced NIF Global Andheri - Platinum Centre’s position as a hub of creative excellence, offering students not just academic learning but also access to industry mentors, global exposure, and experiential opportunities that shape the designers of tomorrow.
