Japan Foundation in association with PVR Cinemas unveils Japanese Film
Festival India 2019-’20 in Mumbai
~The 10-day Festival opened with the screening of the Japanese musical – comedy film, ‘Dance
with Me’~
Mumbai, 17th January 2020: Japan Foundation, New Delhi announced the launch of the third edition of
Japanese Film Festival India 2019- ‘20 (JFF-India) in partnership with PVR Cinemas and powered by
ENEOS, Japan’s No. 1 Oil Company at PVR ICON, Infiniti mall in Mumbai, today. The multi-city film
festival with an overwhelming response from across five cities in 2019, welcomes 2020 in the capital city
of entertainment with an expansive list of twenty-five hand-picked, specially curated contemporary
Japanese films from varied genres. The Japanese Film Festival India kick-started in Mumbai with the
screening of the unprecedented Japanese musical – comedy film, ‘Dance with Me’, directed by Shinobu
Yaguchi, and produced by Warner Bros. Japan.
The launch ceremony in Mumbai opened with Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto, Director-General Japan Foundation
addressing the audience on the vision behind organizing the third edition of Japanese Film Festival in
India. The ceremony was graced by honorable dignitaries, Mr. Masahide Sato, Chief Consul, Consulate
General of Japan in Mumbai, Mr. Thomas Dsouza, Sr. Vice President – Programming, PVR Cinemas, Japanese bureaucrats and members of the Japan Foundation. Further, the event witnessed the presence
of eminent personalities from the Japanese entertainment industry; critically acclaimed Japanese
producers - Mr. Daisuke Sekiguchi, Chief Producer, Warner Bros. Japan and Mr. Hidenori Iyoda, award-
winning Japanese film and television producer. An audience Q&A session with Mr. Daisuke Sekiguchi
was held after the screening of ‘Dance with Me’.
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Kaoru Miyamoto, the Director-General of the Japan Foundation,
New Delhi said, “We are excited to bring the third edition of Japanese Film Festival to Mumbai, the ‘film
city’ of India. We are certain that movie enthusiasts in the city will enjoy and appreciate these
internationally renowned contemporary Japanese Films. Strengthening the long-standing bond of the
two countries; the Film Festival aims to offer a sense and experience of Japanese art, culture and
lifestyle to the Indian audience.” He further added, “So far, we are overwhelmed with the response received from Southern, Northern
and Eastern markets. We are grateful to our partners, PVR Cinemas and ENEOS for their outstanding
support throughout and wish for a smooth and successful festival in Mumbai, too.”
At the opening, Mr. Masahide Sato, Consul General of Japan in Mumbai said, “Mumbai is the heart of
Bollywood, and on the occasion of this Japanese Film Festival, I sincerely hope more and more Indian
people will become interested in watching Japanese movies, and there will be further opportunities for
them to appreciate Japanese society and culture.”
The six-month-long Film Festival, touring across seven cities is showcasing a diverse line-up of popular
Japanese films like Dance with Me, Shoplifters, Weathering with You, We are Little Zombies, Children of
the Sea, Kingdom, Your Name, My Dad is a Heel Wrestler!, Tokyo selected will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles for the viewer’s convenience at PVR Cinemas
only.
