Mumbai Celebrates 50 Years of Madhav Agasti, The Iconic Tailor Behind Bollywood’s Greatest Looks
Mumbai, 13th November, 2025- It was an evening steeped in fashion, memories, and timeless style where Mumbai’s film fraternity came together to celebrate 50 glorious years of Madhav Agasti’s craftsmanship. The Golden Jubilee celebration at Taj Lands End was more than just a milestone; it was a heartfelt tribute to a man whose artistry has defined the look of Bollywood’s most iconic villains for five decades. From Mogambo’s commanding ensemble to Gabbar’s unforgettable look, Madhav Agasti the legendary bespoke designer and tailor has stitched not just garments, but stories. His creations have given life, attitude, and identity to generations of unforgettable on-screen villains, making him an irreplaceable part of Indian cinema’s design legacy.
The celebration was more than just a tribute to his craft; it was a heartfelt salute to his passion, perseverance, and the timeless legacy he has woven over five remarkable decades. The evening glittered with the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Minister of Culture of India Shri Gajendra Singha, Social worker and former member of the Lok Sabha Priya Dutt along with bollywood biggies - Akshay Kumar, Jackie Shroff, Boney Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Gulshan Grover who came together to honour the man whose stitches brought life, character, and charisma to the silver screen.
Agasti’s influence wasn’t confined to cinema; it gracefully extended into the Indian political sphere. Over the years, he designed for several eminent leaders, including Balasaheb Thackeray. The iconic white kurta-style shirts, saffron dupatta, and signature shawls that became inseparable from Balasaheb’s persona were all crafted by Agasti. These weren’t just garments; they were powerful symbols of identity and ideology. His creations helped shape how leaders were perceived, merging simplicity with authority, and tradition with conviction. Agasti’s work serves as a reminder that when clothing is designed with purpose, it transforms fabric into a language of character, culture, and legacy.
As guests walked in, they were welcomed by a breathtaking showcase of Madhav Agasti’s most iconic creations, a visual journey through five decades of cinematic brilliance. From Mogambo, Bad Man to Ram Lakhan and many more, each costume told its own story, reflecting how Agasti’s artistry helped shape some of Indian cinema’s most unforgettable characters. The display felt like a beautiful walk down memory lane, a reminder of how deeply his designs are stitched into the very soul of Bollywood.
During the celebration, Madhav Agasti also reflected on his journey. He spoke about his memoir, “Stitching Stardom: By Madhav Agasti”, which captures his most iconic creations, behind-the-scenes stories, and his philosophy of design. The evening also included a glimpse into the future, as Agasti shared his plans to expand his bespoke tailoring legacy through new ventures led by the next generation of the Agasti family.
Madhav Agasti, speaking about the milestone, said, Fifty years feels like yesterday when I first picked up a needle and thread. Every stitch I’ve made carries a story of the people, the characters, and the emotions behind them. I’ve been fortunate to live a life where my art-dressed legends and my work became part of cinema’s soul. This journey has been built on love, trust, and the countless hands that worked with me through the years. Tonight isn’t just about celebrating my career, it's about celebrating every tailor, craftsman, and artist who believes that one stitch can make a difference.”
Shantanu Agasti, who now carries forward the family’s design vision, added with pride and admiration, “My father’s journey is more than just a story of fashion, it's a lesson in dedication, discipline, and emotion. He’s always believed that every outfit should have a purpose and a soul, not just a silhouette. Watching him work over the years taught me that a garment isn’t merely made of cloth; it’s stitched with conviction, patience, and passion. His ability to understand people, their personalities, and translate that into what they wear is what truly sets him apart. We’re proud to carry forward his vision, his craft, and most importantly, his belief that true design lies in its honesty.”
Avani Agasti shared her thoughts, “Artistry goes far beyond design; it's a lesson in humility, passion, and perseverance. The way he approaches his work, with such care and sincerity, inspires everyone around him. He’s shown us that true greatness isn’t just about fame or success, but about staying grounded through it all. He’s inspired generations, not only through his craft but through the warmth and grace with which he’s lived his journey.”
As the night came to an end, the room was filled with warmth, laughter, and memories. It wasn't just a celebration of clothes or cinema, but of a man who poured his heart into everything he created. Madhav Agasti’s golden jubilee was a beautiful reminder that true success isn’t about fame or awards, it's about the love, respect, and legacy you leave behind. From giving Bollywood’s most iconic villains their unforgettable looks to inspiring generations of designers, Madhav Agasti’s journey is one stitched with passion and purpose. His story shows that when you create with honesty and heart, your work lives on not just in films or fabrics, but in the people whose lives you’ve touched along the way.
